Mentoring is the process whereby an experienced person (the mentor), guides a mentee in the progression and re-examination of their own ideas and learning as well as personal and professional development. Mentoring has been shown to be beneficial for surgeons at any stage in their training and can help mentees in a multitude of aspects including career guidance/progression, work life balance, transitioning into registrar life, support for ARCPs/examinations and general advice.

A regional Mentorship Programme is currently in the process of being established in association with STEER (regional trainee-led research collaborative). This Programme matches all junior registrars (ST3-5) with more senior registrars who have volunteered themselves to become a mentor. This allows an established mentor-mentee relationship through which support/advice can be sought. There are no formal meetings or requirements mandated within this relationship.

For more information or to get involved with the Mentorship Programme, please contact the regional trainee representatives/STEER committee.
