Train: Nearest rail station is Basildon (36 minutes from Fenchurch street, ,London )

Walk: The hospital is a 15 minute walk from the station (uphill).

Buses: Buses 21 and 100, stop at Basildon Town Centre bus station, (across the road from the rail station). Both buses stop within the grounds of the hospital

Car: Multi-story Car parking available. Staff parking charge approx. £30/month

Local Area: Local town of Basildon has many eateries, a shopping centre and cinema. Festival Leisure Park offers a one stop leisure destination with an Empire Cinema, Hollywood Bowl, wakeboarding, nightclubs, bars and.

On-site: Canteen open until 20:00 and Costa Coffee open until 19:00.  Friends Shop open until 19:00

Weekday plan:

General paediatric ward 8:30-16.30 -1 short day ST, 2 FY1s, 1 registrar and a consultant on service. 16.30-21.30- One late ST starting at 14.00 and long day registrar (registrar also cross- covers NICU). 21.30-8.30- ST covers PAU and general

Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU)- 9.00- 14.00- 1 ST , 1 registrar and one consultant. From 14.00-23.00-  2 STs and one registrar . 23.00-8.30am one ST and registrar covering PAU and general paediatric ward. Registrar/acute care consultant also cover NICUs at night.

NICU- 8.30-21.30-Long day ST. 8.30-16.30 – 2 ST in the labour ward/postnatal ward/clinic.

21.30-9.00- 1 ST cover NICU, labour ward and postnatal ward.

Weekend plan

General Paediatrics and PAU 9.00-21.00 one ST1-3, one registrar with an onsite consultant support up to 5PM.

NICU- 9.00-21.00-one long day ST1-3 and one registrar/acute care consultant. On Saturday 9.00-17.00 one short day ST for labour and postnatal ward.

Night 21.30-9.00- One ST managing PAU and paediatric ward. One ST manages NICU,postnatal ward and delivery suite. One registrar/acute care consultant supervises.

Departmental strengths

  • Joint specialist clinics, including respiratory/CF, cardiology, genetics. A monthly telemedicine cardiology clinic with Royal Brompton hospital, weekly epilepsy clinic
  • A very wide spectrum of clinical cases both in general and NICU setting
  • Excellent formal and informal teaching.
  • Particularly receptive and supportive consultant group who are on-site up to 10PM and who have thorough understanding of assessment processes.
  • Extremely capable and supportive nursing staff in all areas.
  • Great working atmosphere with all team members being approachable.
  • Excellent induction with lieu day given for successful completion of online induction.
  • Newly- built paediatric assessment unit.
  • Multidisciplinary diabetes and sickle cell anaemia care team
  • POSCU level 1.  Plenty of exposure to both newly diagnosed and established oncology patients.
  • Online, highly comprehensive and regularly updated paediatric and neonatal guidelines.

Training opportunities

  • Fortnightly simulation training in ward/A&E/neonatal unit with opportunities for trainees to facilitate sessions (Thursday am)
  • Monthly multidisciplinary safeguarding peer review, children’s critical care case review ,audit, evidenced based journal club(supported by librarian)
  • Regular trainees meetings
  • MRCPCH teaching and weekly consultant delivered teaching
  • Regular morning teaching (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday am)

Top tips

 

 

  • Get a copy of clinic schedule early on so that you can mark out particular clinics you would like to attend- there are lots of different specialist clinics
  • Ensure documentation is always complete and legible. Make sure you are familiar with the recommended structure for documenting in notes- there are designated ward round documentation proforma.
  • Ensure all blood and microbiology results are transcribed onto the appropriate flow sheets for all patients
  • Six weeks’ notice is required for study leave, therefore ensure you apply for study leave early and apply online
  • In weekdays, there are 4 consultant led handovers-Morning 8.30 am handover are separate-one in neonatal seminar room and one at paediatric seminar room . In the afternoon and evening there are combined paediatric and neonatal handovers 4.30PM and 9.00PM in paediatric seminar room.
