Dental Technicians

Information is presented here which will help you keep up to date with the General Dental Council (GDC) requirements and help to support you in accessing the education and training you need to embark on the career pathway of a dental technician or clinical dental technician. If you are already qualified and registered, there is information that will support you in fulfilling the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements ensuring you maintain your GDC registration.

Approved Qualifications

There are several pathways to Dental Technician registration, all of which require the student Dental Technician to attend college or university on full or part-time courses with work-based learning in a dental laboratory.

  • BSc (Hons) in dental technology: Entry requirements include 3 A-levels or equivalent qualifications. This is a full-time course delivered by a university dental school.
  • BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in dental technology: The entry requirement is a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A-C), including math, English and science. This is a full-time program at a university.
  • A dental technology foundation degree: This is a training program you can follow whilst working as a professional apprentice. To do this you will need to find employment as an apprentice or trainee dental technician.

These all require the student Dental Technician to attend college or university on full or part-time courses with work-based learning in a dental laboratory.

The GDC provides information about the qualifications which will allow you to register as Dental Technician

At present there is only one UK qualification available that leads to GDC Registration.

Scope of Practice

The GDC Scope of Practice document clearly lays out the extended duties that a dental technician or a clinical dental technician can undertake.
